Protection using tricams

Tricams (abalaks) rank among the simplest offset (eccentric) chocks. Tricams can be placed in rock cracks with parallel sides, both horizontal and vertical. The tricam is a good fit into holes and pores in which it is often the only protection device that can be placed there.

It operates on the principle of rotation of an expanding wedge. The more strain is placed on it, the more it wedges and the better it holds.

But bear in mind when using tricams that under heavy strain they can slide quite firmly into the crack, and pulling them out again can be quite a chore. From this we can assume that it is good to use them for protection in hard and compact rock. At the same time due to its strong jamming after a fall it is not good to insert the tricam too deeply into the rock crack where a person can only reach the fingers with difficulty, and may not be able to pull it out.

A tricam is the ideal protection device for placement in various holes and depressions where other protection devices often cannot be placed.
